ONSTOR LAUNCHES INTO GLOBAL NAMESPACE WITH VERSION 3.0 OF AWARD-WINNING PANTERA AND BOBCAT SCALABLE CLUSTERED NAS SOLUTIONS

Consolidated Virtual File Management Shrinks Costs and Complexity in Windows Environments and Beyond

CAMPBELL, Calif. - April 16, 2007 - ONStor Inc., the leading provider of scalable clustered NAS solutions for the enterprise, today announced the launch of global namespace (GNS) technology in version 3.0 of its award-winning Pantera Clustered NAS Systems and Bobcat Clustered NAS Gateways. By combining a highly scalable clustered NAS architecture with integrated virtualization and GNS technology, ONStor is delivering a unified virtual NAS solution for enterprise-wide file services, dramatically reducing the cost of managing data growth in real time. ONStor scalable clustered NAS systems are deployed across a broad range of demanding enterprise IT applications, including large-scale Windows server consolidation, Internet content delivery, and digital imaging.

"The growth of unstructured file data now requires most enterprises to deploy advanced file management capabilities, including global namespace controls," said Brad O'Neill, senior analyst, Taneja Group. "To that end, any enterprise customer with home directory or Windows file services will enjoy dramatically simpler management and savings in operational costs by deploying ONStor scalable clustered NAS with global namespace. This will be a key component in supporting Windows-based, enterprise-wide file networking initiatives as well as seamless file data consolidation efforts."

ONStor GNS is a highly available cluster-wide namespace that virtualizes multiple physical file systems across both ONStor virtual servers and Windows file servers to present a single logical file system to end users and applications. Having a single logical file system simplifies data access and improves data and information availability by shielding end users from the complexities of adding, moving and rebalancing file data storage across the enterprise. With ONStor GNS, administrators can instantaneously move physical file system storage between virtual servers and NAS gateways in a cluster while keeping the move transparent to clients. Since file system mount points remain the same, no remounting of file systems is needed.

"The single biggest pain point in managing file services in an enterprise is the complexity of mapping file systems to clients and keeping those mappings current. ONStor GNS technology provides an important foundation to simplifying data management in a distributed file storage environment while reducing costs," emphasized John Welter, VP of Technology, Northwest Geomatics. "We are excited that this technology is now available to address the burdens faced by Windows shops as file-based data multiplies."

ONStor GNS enables massive scalability to several petabytes while scaling performance to the single file system in a linear fashion. The addition of GNS functionality to the heterogeneous storage virtualization and virtual file server technology already built into ONStor's Pantera and Bobcat NAS solutions enables customers to fully virtualize their file server environments when they consolidate their files and file storage onto the ONStor NAS solutions.

"Our initial focus for the implementation of ONStor global namespace technology is the Windows file-serving environment, as there is a broad spectrum of users whose file management challenges are not being alleviated by solutions currently on the market," said Jonathan Goldick, chief technology officer, ONStor. "While ONStor GNS is similar in concept to the GNS solutions that other vendors deliver, ONStor is the only enterprise NAS vendor that is focused on delivering simplicity to facilitate large-scale file server consolidation for widespread enterprise environments such as Windows home directories."

Advantages of deploying ONStor GNS solutions to consolidate Windows file server environments
  • Simplified Manageability: End users and applications no longer have to remember multiple share names to access physical file system resources, because all file systems are available under a single share name. This simplification significantly reduces the IT staff's administrative burden.
  • Operational Cost Savings: Simplifying the movement of data between file servers in a distributed or consolidated NAS infrastructure minimizes administrative costs and enables the IT department to respond efficiently to changing storage needs.
  • Unparalleled Flexibility: The global namespace abstracts the physical file-serving infrastructure, enabling administrators to safely migrate or replace any of the file server nodes without impacting end users.
  • Modular Scalability: Customers can scale the capacity and performance of a single file system with ease. Administrators can effortlessly provision and rebalance performance by moving virtual servers transparently between the file server nodes in a cluster while still presenting a single file system to end users.
  • Consolidated Data Protection: IT administrators can manage different data protection schemes and automate replication schedules using policies while enjoying the ease of use GNS offers.
  • Tiered Storage Pools Under a Single Namespace: ONStor GNS spans multiple tiers of disk storage in a way that is completely transparent to end users. ONStor NAS solutions work with an open storage back end, and the tiers can be built out of different types, makes, models, and sizes of storage arrays, with varying RAID levels.
ONStor GNS will be available in May 2007 from ONStor and its partners in the United States, Europe, and Japan; the list price is $20,000 per ONStor NAS cluster.

About ONStor
ONStor drives down the cost of storage management by delivering scalable clustered NAS that saves enterprises 50 percent on total cost of ownership with systems that let customers start small and scale massively as their requirements grow. ONStor's award-winning Pantera Clustered NAS Systems and Bobcat NAS Gateways consolidate information from multiple Windows, UNIX and Linux devices into a single, highly scalable file storage environment. The open storage architecture allows existing assets to be leveraged, while integrated file server virtualization enables resources to be redeployed quickly to accommodate changing needs.
