“Geospatial data sets are exploding due to enhanced imagery collection and our large enterprise customers’ continued demand for more imagery at greater resolution enabled in more software products,” said John Welter, VP of technology, Valtus Imagery Services. “Within the next two years, our total data under management will swell to well over a petabyte. To manage these massive data sets, we’ve deployed the ONStor Pantera Clustered NAS. We compared all the options and found that ONStor gave us a scalable, highly redundant solution at about 1/3 the cost of other NAS systems. In addition, ONStor’s integrated virtualization features, combined with our internally developed image management software, allowed us to manage more data with fewer people, while ensuring 24x7 data availability.”
In its previous environment, Valtus utilized Windows file servers that were attached to a storage area network consisting of external RAID arrays. This approach ultimately encountered increased operating costs and data availability and performance issues. After reviewing solutions from multiple vendors, Valtus chose ONStor to overcome these challenges and keep pace with growth requirements.
Valtus currently manages 350TB on its ONStor Pantera NAS systems. ONStor’s virtualization capabilities allow Valtus to add performance and capacity on demand, and to balance bandwidth demand among clustered nodes, without application disruption or data migration.
“Digital imaging technologies now drive exponential expansion in data sets In industries such as geospatial imaging, medical, and entertainment, challenging companies to find new ways to cost effectively manage growth,” said Jon Toor, vice president of marketing at ONStor. “As Valtus looked for a solution that would allow them to keep pace with their data, they found that the most NAS solutions were too costly and too inflexible to accommodate their growth. With the ONStor Pantera, Valtus is able to cost-effectively support their capacity, performance and reliability needs so that users such as energy firms and government agencies have ready access to geospatial data.”
ONStor NAS systems are available in two configurations: Pantera Clustered NAS and Bobcat NAS Gateways. With over 9,000,000 hours of uptime accumulated in enterprise deployments worldwide, ONStor NAS systems have demonstrated exceptional reliability in mission-critical deployments in technical, Internet, healthcare, education, and other large-scale storage environments.
About Valtus
Valtus Imagery Services is a high volume, high speed digital distributor of ortho-photography. Huge mosaicked datasets are stored on Valtus’ servers and used to create images customized by area, resolution, and coordinate system. These images can be ordered and downloaded from the Valtus website, or accessed by subscription using GIS software. Valtus has been providing access to geospatial data since 1995. The Valtus database reflects the company’s history in Alberta's Oil & Gas industry and includes 1 metre imagery throughout North America. In March 2006 Valtus added complete high resolution coverage for the US states of Montana, North Dakota, and Utah and data for California and Texas, Utah, Nevada, Wyoming and other states are being added before year end.
